Al-Azhar Mosque, Laygate, South Shields - established unknown, photographed here in 1967, rebuilt in 1971-3, registered for solemnising marriages on 28th January 1974 and visited by the legendary boxer Mohammad Ali to have his marriage blessed in 1977. This mosque could have developed from the zawiyas in the 1930s.
